Starting with Why

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said "Actions are but by intentions, and every person will have only what they intended".

Inspirational leadership begins with "Why"; much like intention is the purpose behind the action. The hadith teaches that the value of any action begins with the intention behind it, emphasizing that purpose precedes action. As leaders, having a clear sense of purpose gives us the foundation for our actions and gives meaning to our results.

As organizations grow, they often shift their attention toward what they produce or accomplish, gradually losing sight of the Why that inspired their creation. This drift can weaken culture, reduce engagement, and make decision-making more difficult during periods of change. However, a strong mission rooted in values can keep leaders and teams focused on serving a greater good rather than merely achieving short-term results.

When people understand and believe in the organization's Why, they are more motivated, committed, and willing to contribute to a mission greater than individual goals.

Our role as a leader is to provide just that, a consistent reminding and re-grounding in our Why. When leaders align sincere intentions with consistent actions, they build trust, inspire commitment, and create organizations that remain steadfast even through periods of change and uncertainty.
